Nelda Grayson

Grayson 0001(1)

Nelda Justice Grayson, 84, of China Spring, passed away Monday, December 11, 2023.

A Gathering of Family and Friends: 5 to 7PM Thursday, December 14 at Lake Shore Funeral Home, 5201 Steinbeck Bend in Waco. A private burial is planned at China Spring Cemetery.

Nelda was born February 4, 1939 in Bartlett, Texas, to Clifford and Minnie (Collier) Justice. At a young age, the family moved to Bosqueville and then to China Spring in 1947. Nelda graduated from China Spring High School in 1957 where she excelled in basketball and was a cheerleader. She married Monte Don Grayson on August 2, 1957 in China Spring. She attended 4C Business College and completed an associates’ degree. She then went to work at General Tire in the Bookkeeping Department and stayed many years. She then started working as the Office Administer for Downing Brothers Construction Company.  However, her lifetime dream was to have her own bookkeeping company. She fulfilled her dream in the mid-1980’s when she established Grayson Bookkeeping Service and kept working until she retired in 2005. However, during her working career, she enjoyed sewing and was an excellent seamstress. She sewed most of the clothes for the family, as well as wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses.  Nelda was also passionate about painting and loved to teach others how to use oil-based paint. However, after retirement, she started putting some of these activities aside and became an avid watcher of NBA Basketball.

Nelda was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Monte Don Grayson; son, Monte Glynn Grayson; twin brother, Duyrl Ray Justice; and brother, Wayne Lamar Justice.

Survivors include her sister, Vonda Gene Koster and husband Kenneth; grandson, Matthew Scott Grayson; daughter-in-law, Danni Leigh Mayfield and husband Dan; and a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives.

The family would like to acknowledge and extend a special thank you to Brookdale Lakeshore Assisted Living, to Maria Solano, who was her care giver for many years, and to Jeffrey Jaynes, whose kindness and compassion towards Nelda will always be remembered.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Humane Society of Central Texas or Fuzzy Friends Rescue.

Condolence Messages

  1. Vonda, just seeing this. I’m so sorry. I know you will miss her a lot. I will also remember the snow ball fight at your house with Nelda and Monte. And we had a couple of double dates in high school. Nelda was very sweet and loved by many people. I wish I had read my messages earlier so I could be there. You have my number so call if you need anything.

Nelda was a dear friend to me and my mother for many years. I was so sad today to hear of her passing but I know she has a dear friend and so many other loved ones waiting to greet her in heaven.

Blessings and condolences to Danni and Matthew.
