Michael "Mike" Ray Garrett, 62, of Waco, passed away Monday, October 21st at a local hospital. A memorial gathering of family and friends will be 6 to 7:30PM Thursday, October 24th at Lake Shore Funeral Home, 5201 Steinbeck Bend in Waco. Michael was born November 21, 1950, in Waco, to the late Dr. Melvin Garrett and Martha Anne (Myers) Freeman. After graduating from Waco High, Mike went on to work for the Union Pacific Railroad. He loved to fish and play golf. He had a great sense of humor and was quite charming.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Douglas and Ronald Garrett.

He is survived by his daughter, Candice Conny and husband David; grandchildren, Ethan Bennett and Emmalyn; nephews and nieces, Jeanann Wilkinson, Steve Garrett, Brian Garrett, and LeAnne Garrett.

A special thank you to Billy Pitman for being such a good friend and helping care for Mike.

  1. The old saying goes: "look up the word ‘cool’ in the dictionary, and there you would find a picture or Mike". For much of his life, Mike Garrett was one of the embodiment of the word "cool". I fist met him in 9th grade, around 1964. He was a Tennyson kid…that figures, and he looked the part. He was always in style; he was one of the best looking guys in our age group; he dressed right; his family lived in a "really cool" apartment. In his younger years Mike had a "rockstar" quality. It seemed like Mike could do anything, be anything that he wanted. I know that he had his problems later in life, don’t we all, but I’ll always think of Mike as one of the "coolest" guys I have ever known…and he didn’t even have to try.

    I have many good memories of Mike;either visiting with Mike, Debbie, and Candice at their house, years later seeing Mike and Billy Bob at Brad’s apartment, and Mike’s passion for golf. Mike had a big heart and will be missed by all. May God be with his family and friends.
