Luther V. Battles, 85, of Waco, passed away Sunday, April 21st at his residence with his family by his side. Funeral services will be 9AM Thursday, April 25th at Lake Shore Funeral Home Chapel with Honorable Judge Bob McGregor officiating. Burial will follow at Cottonwood Cemetery near Hubbard. Visitation will be 6 to 8PM Wednesday, April 24th at Lake Shore Funeral Home, 5201 Steinbeck Bend in Waco. Luther was born September 23, 1927 in Brooken, TX to William Russell and Rosa Lea (Copeland) Battles. At the age of sixteen, he served with the Merchant Marines during World War II. He married Lenita Ruth Green on December 19, 1947 in Waco. He worked for Brown and Root, National Life Insurance Company, and Waco Tribune-Herald as a news distributor. He also worked as a supervisor for Baylor athletic events, maintenance for Heart of Texas Soccer fields. Since he did not finish high school and served during the war, the State of Texas granted Luther a valid high school diploma and he graduated from Abbott High School – Class of 2002. He coached his children in Little League Baseball and enjoyed fishing, and hunting with his grandchildren. He was a member of Park Lake Drive Baptist Church, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge #92, and the NRA.

He was preceded in death by his wife Lenita Green Battles; his parents; brother, J. W. Battles; sisters, Willie Mae Twitty, Virgie Sullins, Kathryn Battles; and great grandson, Christian Scott Parker.

Survivors include sons, Michael Battles and wife Annette of Waco, David Battles and wife Paula of Waco, Gerald Battles and wife Terrie of Waxahachie; daughters, Brenda McGregor and husband Bob of Hillsboro, and Pamela Kellough of Waco; 14 grandchildren, Jason, Aaron, Mike, Pam, Zack, Crystal, Caleb, Brandi, Ashley, Dusti, Heather, Tara, Sarah, and Phillip.; and 26 great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Park Lake Drive Baptist Church Building Fund.
