Berton Frederick Stengel, 77 of Eddy slipped peacefully into the arms of his Lord and Savior January 8, 2024, with Jean his wife of 51 years by his side.

Celebration of Life: 2PM Saturday, February 17 at Lake Shore Funeral Home. The visitation will begin one hour prior.

Bert was born in Waco, TX December 31, 1946 to Fred and Mildred Stengel who preceded him in death followed by two brothers and one sister.  Bert is survived by his wife, Jean of Eddy; son, Charles and Sandra of Kaufman; daughter, Jessica and husband Bobby Land of Eddy; precious grand children whom he loved, grandsons, Dylan Stengel and Devin Land; granddaughter, Brittany Land of Eddy; sister, Rose Marie Bryson of Waco; niece, Sharon Ann and Vance Stanley of Houston and honorary son, Bobby Donahoo of Brownwood.

Bert enjoyed woodworking, gardening, canning, and making jellies to share with friends and family. He grew up at the South Waco Church of Christ and was a long-time member of Moody Church of Christ where he served as a Deacon. Bert graduated from University High School in 1965. He furthered his education in Wichita Falls at Mid-Western University where he graduated in 1972 with an Associate Degree in Nursing. He further earned his Bachelor of Science in Nursing at Texas Women’s University in Dallas.  Bert was employed with the VA Medical Center for 28 years. Nursing was his second choice for a career. So, after his retirement he earned his teaching certificate in 1998 and began teaching science at Penelope ISD until his second retirement in 2010. This is where he found his love for teaching children. In 2001 Bert was named Region 12 education service center Teacher of the Year. Bert was a volunteer with 4H with his own children on many projects and continued to volunteer with other families. He received the Governors Volunteer Award for 25 years of service with McLennan County 4H.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at 8111 Lyndon B. Johnson Fwy #425 Dallas, TX 75240, The Cherokee Home for Children at P.O. Box 295 Cherokee, TX 76832 or Baylor Scott and White Hospice at 2911 Herring Ave Suite 310 Waco, TX 76708.

Honorary pallbearers: Scott Baumgartner, Bobby Donahoo, Michael Hosch, Bobby Land, Johnathan Mitchell, Leslie Moss, Vance Stanley, and Randy Stewart.

The family would like to thank the Baylor Scott and White family for the wonderful care given to Bert and his family.
