Wayne “Poppy” Barton, 73, of Woodway, moved on from this life to the next, Thursday, April 14, 2022, after a brave battle with stage four lung cancer. No doubt he was greeted by his sweet mom and dad, whom he adored, as well as many of his very best friends.
A memorial service will be held on May 4, 2022 at Lake Shore Funeral Home at 2pm followed by a celebration of life at George’s Banquet Hall from 4-7pm. CLICK HERE to view the Live Stream of the service.
Wayne was a people enthusiast. He worked his entire life in banking. As a loan officer, he took a chance on many people that others wouldn’t, and oftentimes was instrumental in making their dreams come true. He never met a stranger and knew anyone by name after only one meeting. Always with a smile and a “good morning” or “good afternoon”, friends, family, and strangers alike looked forward to his innate ability to brighten their day by just being in it.
He was a wonderful story teller and told them in grand detail. He loved sports, especially when his grandkids were playing. He loved music. He would turn off his TV to listen when one of his granddaughters would practice for solo competitions or when she was learning to play an instrument. He was so proud of each and every grandchild and great-grandchild and bragged about them every chance he got.
Wayne was born May 20, 1948, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, son of the late Walter “Tex” and Katherine Tallent Barton.
Wayne’s survivors include his brothers, Billy Barton (Patricia) Stephen Barton (Renee) all of Dalton, GA; sons, Kevin Barton (Christy) and Tony Barton of Waco; grandchildren, Sarah Merritt (Chance) of Houston, Jacob Bethke of Dallas, Hannah Pechacek (Noah), Katie Barton, Bailee Barton, and Kyle Barton all of Waco; and seven great-grandchildren.
The Barton family would like to thank all of our family, friends, and co-workers who stood by us through the many highs and lows of Wayne’s illness. A special thanks to Wayne’s nurse at Regent Care, Francine, who advocated for him when we couldn’t be by his side, always making sure the blinds were open for him to see the sun, and held his hand for added comfort.

We were good friends on Facebook, and one of my “favorites”.
Wayne and I were 1963 classmates at Richfield High School.

Sorry Wayne lost the battle with Cancer. He was a fighter and never gave up . May he Rest In Peace 🙏
Snowmageden 2021 allowed my husband and I to get to know Wayne on a more intimate level. He spent his final years in the home of his son (Kevin) and our daughter (Christy). When Snowmageden hit and we lost power, our Barton family welcomed us in theirs. Quickwitted and easygoing, Wayne kept us entertained with his stories of yesteryear. After four days, he was no longer just a member of the family, he was a new friend. Rest in peace, kind sir.
So sorry for y’all’s loss. I was glad I got to introduce to my wife to him a few years ago.

I have nt seen Wayne since High School but we stayed in touch. He had told me that he was going to Texas Oncology. I never got to see him there but I remember him as a very good person. He was friends with my brothers. He will see Larry in heaven. So sorry for your loss.
Wayne and I worked together at First Financial Corp. for many years. He was one of the best friends I ever had. We went through a lot of lifes’ happenings together. I am going to miss that great smile. Fly high my friend, you are pain free and with your buddies.

Wayne, John and I didn’t see you a whole lot but every time we did you were talkative, kind and courteous. So sorry you lost your battle but I know you’re now free of pain and with God. Rest In Peace.
