Robert L. Birkes, 90, of Waco, passed away Monday, December 14, 2015 at St. Catherine Center.

Visitation: Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, December 17th at Lake Shore Funeral Home, 5201 Steinbeck Bend Road.

Service: Graveside service with military honors will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, December 18th at the Waco Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel with Deacon Jessie C. Garza officiating.

Robert was born March 29, 1925 in Waco to Virl L. Birkes and Mable Green Birkes. He married Angeline L. Prnka August 21, 1948 in West. He retired from General Tire in 1987 with 42 years of service and was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 2148 and the American Legion Post 121.

He was preceded in death by his wife; a brother, Roy Birkes of Oklahoma City, OK; and a sister, Ruby Brisby of Waco.

Robert is survived by his sons, Thomas Birkes and wife, Kathy of Crawford and Dan Birkes of Waco; grandson, Brian Birkes and Kendra Vicary of Waco; and several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staffs of Waco Cardiology, Providence CHF Clinic, Dr. Todd Blattman, Dr. Robert Anderson, Providence Health Center and Providence Hospice for their care of Robert.

In lieu of floral arrangements, memorials may be directed to Providence Hospice, Meals on Wheels or your favorite charity.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I came to know Mr. Birkes when he would come to the Round Bank to have lunch with Brian.
As he would wait, we would have almost daily conversations about a variety of topics…General Tire, bingo, cutting the yard, …it didn’t matter. He would always say ” I don’t want to take you away from your work”. But, I didn’t mind 🙂 He was engaging, entertaining and I truly did enjoy those few minutes that he sat there in the waiting area. Sweet man who truly will be missed.

I was sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Birkes. He was such a sweet, humble man who
reminded me a lot of my dad. We used to chat when he was at the bank waiting for Brian.
