Mel Harris, 91, of Waco, passed away Tuesday, November 8th at his residence.

Funeral Service: 2PM Saturday, November 12th at Lake Shore Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jane Woodward officiating. Burial will follow at China Spring Cemetery with military honors rendered by the U.S. Navy.

First Visitation: 6 to 8PM Friday, November 11th at Lake Shore Funeral Home.
Second Visitation: one hour prior to the Funeral Service on Saturday.

Melvin was born January 19, 1925 in Waco to Raymond C. and Julia A. (Massey) Harris. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946 as an Aviation Mechanic/Gunner Third Class. He married Annie Lee “Anne” Holland on June 1, 1948 in Roseburg, OR. Melvin worked 28 years as a plumber and pipefitter for the federal government and was also a member of Plumbers Pipefitters Local Union #26 in Burlington, WA for 38 years. He also owned and operated his own business. Melvin was involved in several organizations throughout his life including Boy Scouts as a Leader, DAV, VFW and teaching Sunday school. He was a member China Spring United Methodist Church.

Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Malcom W. Harris and Jim Bob Harris; and great granddaughter, Emma Grace Rose.

Survivors include wife of 68 years, Anne Harris of Waco; daughters, Melanie Sue Rose and husband Robert Freeman of Ephrata, WA, and Judy Marlene Dunford and husband Robert Eugene of Centerville, GA; son, Joseph Raymond Harris and partner George Louis Medina of San Antonio; brothers, Newton L. Harris and wife Marion of Waco, and Jackie Ray Harris of Canyon Lake; sisters, Betty Elaine Hughes of Saginaw, Julia Anita Mazanec of Waco, and Frances Valetta Spears of Saginaw; five grandchildren; and  two great grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to China Spring United Methodist Church or your charity of choice.

The family would like to acknowledge a special thanks to Mel’s caregivers Bluebonnet Hospice- Nicky and Jake, and Visiting Angels- Shaunda, Clytis, Karen, Veronica, Curtis and Natasha for your loving care.
