Spencer

Dr. Spencer Vernon Moore, 73, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for eternity Monday, February 6, 2023.

Visitation: 6 to 8PM Thursday, February 9 at Lake Shore Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life Service: 10AM Friday, February 10 in the Life Center at Highland Baptist Church in Waco, officiated by his pastors, John Durham and Ron Durham.
A Live stream of the service can be accessed at youtube.com/hbcwaco.

Dr. Spencer Vernon Moore, 73, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for eternity Monday, February 6, 2023.

Spencer was born February 28, 1949, to Billie Bob and Juanita Moore in Hillsboro, TX. He graduated from Hillsboro High School (1967), played golf for Hill Junior College (1967-69), and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree (1971) and a Doctorate in Optometry (1973) from the University of Houston Optometry School.

He married Jeanie Anderson in August 1971.

In the eighth grade, Spencer knew that God wanted him to be an optometrist. He even applied to U of H Optometry School then to make sure that he took all of the right classes in high school and at Hill Junior College. They said no one that young had ever applied. He practiced for 40 years in Waco, before retiring in 2013. He loved helping people see more clearly and making them smile.

Spencer had been involved in photography since he was in optometry school (it all fit together – lenses, lighting, making the objects sharp and in focus). When he retired, he and Jeanie began traveling to take pictures of nature and wildlife. He loved seeing the world that God created and capturing it in photos that he could share with others.

He also began photographing for Baylor athletics. His real love was football, but he photographed other sports as well. It was his dream job.

Spencer was preceded in death by his parents, Billie Bob & Juanita Moore and his sister Vanessa Moore Jander.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jeanie Moore; son, Scot and wife Leslie Moore; daughter, Melody and husband Paul Day; and grandchildren, Jonathan, Madeline, Caleb, Caroline, Levi, and Daniel Day.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions  should be made to Highland Baptist Church, 3014 Maple Ave., Waco, TX 76707, or Operation Christmas Child.

Condolence from Pat Rhoades on February 10th, 2023 10:10 am

Although I live in Indiana now I was a classmate of Spencer’s in Hillsboro long ago. I don’t remember how or exactly when we reconnected and I started receiving his picture of the day. No matter what was happening in my life, good or bad, Spencer’s pictures of bugs, flowers, horses, owls, eagles and on, with their reverence for and joy in the abundance of our world, reassured me that the Universe is taking care of me. Thank you Spencer. I will miss you. My condolences to your family.

Condolence from Terry Williams on February 10th, 2023 12:30 pm

I got to know Spencer working Baylor Football and Basketball events. We quickly became friends. I enjoyed photography as a hobby, so we had something in common. Spencer was always willing to show me things and share tips. He was always in a good mood and had a great sense of humor. I will miss seeing and talking with him on the sidelines and in the stands. My condolences to Jeanie and their family as they work through this loss, may God bless and comfort you, knowing this is not the end.

Condolence from Randall Maxwell on February 10th, 2023 12:32 pm

Dear Jeanie, Scot, Melody, I am so sorry to learn of Spencer’s passing. Growing up on Gail street we had a bird dog named Sam and when Spencer called our home to speak with my parents, if I answered the phone “Hello,” he would always respond in kind with “Sam?” His humor cracked me up and I grew to love his gentle ribbing. I will always remember his warm smile and the kindness he showed my family. Having experienced personal loss myself recently, a local pastor quoted 2nd Corninthians 5:8 to me- We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. – I offer that verse to you as well. He is indeed in the presence of our Lord. God bless you and your entire family.

Jeanie & Family, We are so sorry to hear of your tremendous loss with Spencer’s passing. Enjoyed knowing him and sharing classes with him in Hillsboro, class of ’67! I always thought of him as a gentle giant (because he was so tall, even in Junior High). We reconnected at one of the class reunions and on FB. He added me to his list of daily photographs, which was such a delight and in awe of his amazing talent. I was missing his photos and didn’t realize until a few days ago when I saw on FB of his passing. Spencer touched many lives and left a beautiful legacy. Sending heartfelt condolences & remembering your family in our thoughts and prayers.
