It is with profound sadness and utmost respect that we honor the life and legacy of Charles “Slick” Love, who passed away on October 18, 2023, leaving a legacy rich with accomplishments, mentorship, and love.
Born in Oak Hurst, Texas, on October 22, 1939, Charles was the beloved son of Bertha Mae and Howard Love. Charles began his education at Lott Canada in Beeville, Texas, later making history at A.C. Jones High School as its first African American athlete. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in science and physical education at Paul Quinn College, followed by a master’s degree in education and a Superintendent’s Certification from Prairie View A&M University.
Charles’s athleticism was not just a talent but a testament to his determination and excellence. During his time at A.C. Jones High School, he not only broke barriers but set records, earning All-District recognition in Football and Basketball, and establishing new records in Track and Field. His prowess caught the eyes of many, leading to a full scholarship at Paul Quinn College. There, as the Tigers’ star running back, he garnered Southwest Athletic All-Conference selections, spearheading the Tigers to a SWAC conference championship title in 1958. Beyond the football field, Charles showcased his speed on the track, and he was an avid, passionate, and enthusiastic scratch golfer.
In 2002, he was bestowed the esteemed title as “King of Lott Canada School.” In 2006, in recognition of his outstanding achievements, Charles was inducted into the Beeville High School Hall of Fame for Football, Basketball, and Track.
Charles’s impact extended beyond the athletic field. He devoted 57 years of his life as an educator in Waco Area School Districts as teacher, coach, various administrative positions and mentoring countless young athletes and students.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and two sisters. As we mourn the loss of such a monumental figure, we take solace in the memories he’s left behind and the paths he’s paved for future generations.
As we reflect on and honor Charles’ remarkable achievements and contributions, we also cherish the memory of the man himself: a doting husband to Charlotte, a committed father to Staci, Keith, Adrion, and Roderick, and a loving brother to Carolyn. His enduring legacy will resonate in the lives of his grandchildren, the many family members he held dear, the many student-athletes, and the numerous relatives and friends fortunate to have been a part of his storied life’s journey. We will all cherish his love and devotion.
At Mr. Love’s request, he will be cremated and his urn will be placed in a special display case at Lott Canada Museum in Beeville, Texas with his name and picture attached.
May Charles “Slick” Love rest in eternal peace and be forever remembered for the love, excellence, and inspiration he brought to all.

Condolences for the family of “Charles “Slick” Love”
I loved Mr. Love…..We were his first class after his graduation from Paul Quinn. He taught 6th grade J. N. Jenkins Elementary. He took pride in saying “We were his best class because we were his first class.”
Very seldom does one remember their teachers, but Mr. Love was the exception. Goodnight Sir……

What a great teacher, I was a student of Mr Love’s in the 5th grade at JN Jenkins he taught math and he was my home room teacher, he had a little slogan to keep confusion down in the class room, he has taught three generations of Haliburton’s in my family he will be so missed and remember as that teacher the kids love and respected.
Sorors Staci and Evan, you have my heartfelt condolences. May God comfort and strengthen you is my prayer. Love you both .

Mr Love was a remarkable educator. He was one of my mother’s teachers and my Assistant Principal in junior big while I attended Tennyson Middle School. Rest eternally and know that you made an impact on many lives.

My sincere condolences to the family of “Mr. Love.” I was a student at G. W. Carver and well remember the stark white, perfectly ironed uniform he wore as a PE student teacher; then was his debonair style as a well respected teacher and coach. Although there was not a big difference in our ages and after I reached adulthood we became friends, I was never able to call him by his first name! He was always “Mr. Love!” What a legacy he leaves in his home community as well as in the Waco community. May his trailblazing blueprint serve as hope for those he leaves behind. Peace, my friend!
My condolences and prayers of strength to the family of “Mr. Love.” I was a student at G. W. Carver when he, in his stark white, perfectly ironed uniform became a physical education student teacher from Paul Quinn, and later became a teacher/coach. Although there was not a big gap in our ages and as adults we became friends, he always remained “Mr. Love. ” May the blueprint he left in his home community as well as in the Waco community serve as a beacon of hope for generations to come. My condolences to Mr. Love’s family. He taught and coached at Richfield when I was there, and was also Assistant Principal at Tennyson Jr. High School when my mother taught there. He was well respected by all, and shaped many students.

My Condolences to Mr. Love’s family. It was my privilege to have worked with him as fellow administrators in Waco ISD. He was an outstanding ad administrator who was loved by his many students and colleagues. Rest well my friend.

Had the honor of knowing Mr. Love he worked at G.L. Wiley my favorite memory of him is when he told us to get to class… He was a very nice person he will be missed ❤️😭

Mr. Charles Love was a colleague of mine at Waco High 9th Grade Center in WISD. He was a wonderful, caring man that treated others with great dignity and respect. I admired him very much. He had his own unique way of working with students that let them know he cared but also held them responsible for their actions. A wonderful man and educator. My sincere sympathies to the family. He made a difference and will be missed.
Mr. Love you will truly be missed i always look forward seeing you at campuses all dress up in those beautiful suits and a big smile you always made me so welcome when i came over to visit with you and Ms.Love. Rest In Paradise my dearest friend.
Coach Love was my coach at Lake Air Jr. High and at Richfield High School. He was very special to me, Coach Love gave me a chance to prove myself on the field when bigger faster players had an advantage. I won the battle he let me attempt and I have always loved the man for that gift. He was important to me!
