Virginia Rose Lee Dougherty of Abbott, Texas died peacefully at home on Sabbath morning, February 3, 2018. There will be a private family gathering to remember and celebrate her life at a future date.

Virginia’s favorite verse in the Bible was Proverbs 17:22 “A merry heart does good like a medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.” Although we’re sad at the hole in our hearts that she leaves by her passing, we will find a way to remember her with joy.

A life-long teacher, Virginia never met a child she didn’t love or learn to love. In her family were not only her two daughters, grandson, and great-grandson, but also the students that she taught in school or at church or simply “adopted” as her kids over the years. They were all special to her. When she went back to college to become an LVN at age 50, she found that she also loved her home health patients and the people she worked with at Head Start, Salvation Army, and Interfaith Ministries in Hillsboro, TX.

She was preceded in death by her husband Joel David Dougherty and her sister Martha Louise Brown.

Her legacy is continued with her daughter, Donna Schmidt and husband Robert of Albuquerque, NM, her daughter, Elath Dalene Dougherty of Abbott, TX, her grandson Justin Michael Dougherty, his wife Lee, and great-grandson Sterling, also of Abbott, TX. Cousins and in-laws too numerous to mention who have been her best friends over the years will surely miss her, as will her nephews, nieces and her many friends.

We ask that should you choose to remember Virginia in a tangible way, please give flowers to your mother, or someone else you love who’s still alive, and consider a donation to Alzheimer’s Association or your local food bank.

Condolence from Williams Family on February 10th, 2018 1:13 pm

The loss of a cherished loved one is the most devastating experiences a family can face. At times, the loss may seem unbearable. Please know that there are family and friends who care and more importantly Psalm 34:18 tells us that “God is near to those that are broken at heart. He is the God of all comfort. God will comfort you during this difficult time of grief. Our prayers are also with you and your family.
