Condolence from Denise Johnson Craigen on February 28th, 2014 9:13 am

Danni, Bob and Steve, I just learned of your father’s death and wanted to let you know how sorry I am. Losing one parent is hard enough but losing both with a year is almost too much. I don’t think I ever met your Dad but reading his life story I know I would have liked him. He had an amazing life full of adventure, purpose and love. I hope that you find comfort in knowing that he is in God’s hands and you have your life of happy memories of him forever.

I frequently tell my students Mr. Colonel Darden stories. I loved him dearly; he was a wonderful man. I have begun reading his obituary-love hearing his voice again. My prayers are with the family who were lucky to have him in their lives.

Condolence from Kathy Bullock Chiero on February 28th, 2014 9:14 am

Bob, Steve, and Danni:

Your family is an integrally woven part of the Bullock family history. I’m so sorry to hear of your Dad’s passing – but loved reading his lively obit. It reminded me of his love of storytelling, life,Texas, your mom, and each of you. Besides being the ever-present figure in the sidebar of our lives, one of my earliest memories is running down the street from our house in Spokane to show your dad my new underwear. (To the uninformed reader I was under the age of 5…) He kindly complimented by choice of undergarment and sent me back home to cover them up.

My love to you and your family – may the memory of this great man bring you comforting conversation and laughter, may his presence with your Mother bring you peace; and may the huge part of Colonel Robert F Darden left in each of you bless the lives of generations to come.

Condolence from Larry Retzack on February 28th, 2014 9:14 am

I never had the good fortune of meeting Col. Darden, but lived @ Itazuke Air Base during his tenure there and was fortunate enough to have his son Robert play percussion in my school band at that time. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his extended obituary and as a former pro writer, proofed it. If there is opportunity for corrections, paragraph 14 from the beginning dealing with Gen. Le May should read "MISunderstanding" instead of understanding. And 8 paragraphs from the end "prove" should be past tense; i.e., "proved."

Finally, I want to add my admiration for the Col’s. namesake son, Robert. After teaching 31 years for the U.S. Dept. of Defense Dependents Schools, Robert, III is surely the only student I’ve ever had who has written something like 25 books dealing with theology & related subjects. On top of that, his editorship of "The Door" subtitled something like the only religious satire magazine in the world, is exemplary work. Satire is my all-time favorite genre, and Robert III is clearly a satiric master on the level of Swift & Twain.

My best wishes to the Col’s. spirit, Robert, III & all family members. That the Col. missed that initially scheduled flight on which his colleagues were killed clearly meant he was spared for a reason and I know exactly how that feels.

Respectfully submitted,
Larry Retzack

Dear Danni,
our parents were the best of friends for decades. I loved Bob and Jo Ann like second parents. I saw Jo Ann and Bob for the last time right after my Momma’s funeral. I feel honored to have known them. There is no pain greater than that of losing our parents. We love you Danni.

Condolence from Michelle Picard on February 28th, 2014 9:14 am

I had the honor and privilege to work with Col. Darden my very first year of teaching. He took me under his wing and mentored me the whole year. He was very generous with his resources and words of wisdom. I have always appreciated his help that year. He was an honorable man and a great example to the children he taught. I am praying for you and your family.

Condolence from Sue Lowry on February 28th, 2014 9:14 am

Dani,

I missed his passing as I was in law school at the time. I’ll never forget his fascinating stories, or the kindness and hospitality that both he and Jo showed me. We all lost a good one with his passing.
