Rex Burnett

Rex Burnett, 80, of Waco, passed away Friday, September 20, 2019.

Memorial Service: 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct 15, 2019, at Bible Way Church, 2800 Gurley Ave, in Waco.

Rex was born August 30, 1939, to Dutch and Sylvia Burnett in, El Paso, TX.  From a young age, he was known to be self-sufficient and willing to work hard for his wages.  He grew up with his older siblings Barbara and Johnny.

In 1970, Rex moved with his childhood sweetheart, Ida, to the little town of West.  There, they built a family of four with their daughters Johanna and Jessica. Rex and Ida later divorced but not before raising their 2 girls and starting Burnett Electric, his Electrical Contractor business.  Later, Rex raised Johanna’s boys, Jesse and Ricky with the help of Lisa.

Rex was a former president of Cen-Tex Kennel Club and would actively participate in obedience and dog training classes for the club.  While living in West, he and Ida started Shalako Kennels, a boarding kennel but their true passion was becoming a reputable breeder of German Shepherds and Pembroke Welsh Corgis.

Rex was known for his strong work ethic and shrewd business sense.  He continued to run Burnett Electric well into his mid-70s.  He was always willing to help friends and family with projects, whether small or large.  He was a respected man who could be trusted to do what he promised.

In retirement, Rex spent many hours on the water, fishing, or hanging out with friends drinking coffee.  He was an avid reader and loved watching football.  He was an intelligent, witty man who kept you on your toes.  Rex was the epitome of a man happy in his own skin, humble and kind.

Rex is survived by his children Johanna and Jessica (Kevin); grandchildren, Jesse (Bianca) and Ricky; two great-grandchildren; and sister, Barbara. He will be missed by additional family and friends.

We would like to acknowledge a special thank you to Neil Wiese, Lisa Stimpson, and their families.
