The Rev. Dwayne Polk Sr., 67, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2020.
Service Information: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 4, at Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church, 500 Turner St, Waco, TX 76704. (Due to Covid 19 Mandates, seating capacities will be limited and mask will be required.)
Rev. Dwayne Polk Sr. was born to proud parents, George Ivra Polk and Zadie Polk, on September 24, 1952 in Ft. Worth, Texas. He was the firstborn of 6 boys, including Ivra Jerome, Ronnie Joe, Daryl, Anthony, and Samuel. Rev. Polk’s household was a household of deep Christian faith; in his earlier years, he was an active part of Rising Star Baptist Church. His parents knew that raising a child in the knowledge of God was important, but little would they know how much that would shape his life.
After graduating from Polytechnic High School in June 1971, he decided to serve his country by joining the United States Air Force. During this time is when he met and married the love of his life, Joyce Marie Harvey of Waco, Tx.
In 1976, Rev. Polk and his wife moved to Waco. Shortly thereafter, he decided to continue his studies at McLennan Community College in English and Writing. A few years later, Dwayne felt a call to serve his country but in a new way; he joined the United States Postal Service in various capacities, completing over 37 years of dedicated service to the US Government.
Rev. Dwayne has always been a jovial, fun-loving person that enjoyed to be with people. People have remarked time again about his smile and generally encouraging and happy demeanor. He loved league bowling, enjoying/collecting lots of music, writing poetry, reading books of all types, as well as being a huge comedy and science fiction fan.
Rev. Dwayne never forgot his Christian roots. And even before his calling to formal preaching ministry, he had long been a servant for Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church in the capacity of Deacon. Dwayne had often said that he had been “running” from God’s call on his life to preach, but in 2006, he finally decided to stop “running” and accept his calling. God further blessed this decision as his was formally ordained into ministry by Greater Mt. Olive Baptist Church’s pastor, Rev. Melvin Petty, on December 2nd, 2007. Some of the ministries he worked with were Brotherhood/Men’s ministry, Sunday School teacher, Bible studies, as well as nursing home ministry. With his deep passion for study and love for Jesus and people, we was always a favorite for many when he spoke. Rev. Polk was nicknamed the “Praying Man” by those who knew him…and for good reason!
He is survived by his father, (George Ivra Polk); his aunt (Brady Jackson), his five brothers; his wife, (Joyce Polk); as well as children; grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

To the family of Rev. Dwayne Polk. It was with much sadness that we received the news of Rev. Polk’s passing. Although we knew he had been sick for some time it was still a shock. Rev. Polk was a real individual, intelligence and full of joy. Always smiling and very courteous. Remember this family, those we love remain with us for love itself lives on and cherished memories never fade because a loved one’s gone. For as long there’s a memory, Rev. Polk lives on in your hearts. May God Bless the entire Polk family.

Sorry for lost to they polk family 👪 members we truly lost a great man but truly god Almighty needed him miore for greater things he will truly be missed down here our hearts 💕💕 are troubled but make no mistake. I am so sorry to hear of Dwayne’s passing. When I think of the essence of Dwayne, King David comes to mind. He was humble in spirit, joyous in praise, courageous in battle, and quick to repent. Dwayne, in my opinion, possessed all of these qualities that made David “a man after God’s own heart.” Dwayne can’t help but be missed by his family and all that knew him.
My prayer for the family is for the comfort and peace that washes over God’s children in times of trouble, to wash over you during this time of grief.
