Nancy Roberts Detlefsen, 71, of Waco, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday December 3, 2021.

Visitation: 5-7pm, Wednesday, December 8, at Lake Shore Funeral Home.

Funeral Service: 10am, Thursday, December 9 at Bosqueville Baptist Church, with graveside immediately following at Bosqueville Cemetery.

Nancy was born on November 3, 1950 in Waco to Elmer and Annette Roberts, and was their only child. She attended Waco schools and graduated from Richfield in 1968. Nancy then graduated from Baylor University with her Bachelor of Arts in 1971 and then with a Master of Science & Education in 1976. It was after receiving her bachelor’s degree that she met her husband, Bob Detlefsen. After dating for 11 years, they were united in marriage on December 18, 1982. In July of 1984, they had their only child Clint, who she loved more than anything.

Nancy was a lifelong member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church where she would work in the nursery while her son Clint attended Sunday School.

She worked in Waco ISD for 41 years where she was first a teacher, and then a counselor for most of her career. Nancy was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and received many awards over the years for being an outstanding teacher as well as counselor. Nancy made a huge impact on the lives of thousands of students who passed through her schools during those years. So many of her co-workers became good friends of hers and stayed in touch until her passing.

Nancy enjoyed reading John Grisham novels, cheering on the Baylor Lady Bears Basketball team, dining at the Baylor Club, putting together hundreds of jigsaw puzzles, listening to Bob and Clint’s hunting stories, organizing historical family pictures, being involved in the Historical Bosqueville group; but most of all she enjoyed seeing her son Clint and two grandchildren, Maesyn and Zach.

Pallbearers will be Parnell McNamara, Aubrey Stringer, John Cathey, Richard L. Jones, Billy Lee Azbell, Tommy Renschler, and Mike Serbanic.

She was preceded in death by her parents, aunts, and uncles.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband of almost 39 years, Bob; only son, Clint and wife, Cari; grandchildren, Maesyn and Zach; and numerous cousins, friends, and former students.

Flowers are most welcome. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Waco Scottish Rite Charitable Foundation by contacting the Lee Lockwood Library and Museum.

Place of Service: Bosqueville Baptist Church , 7465 Rock Creek Rd.; Waco, TX 76708

Nancy and I were classmates all through Jr. High and High School. In the seventh grade we were in choir. She has a beautiful voice and I learned to sing second soprano because she helped me through the difficult parts.

Nancy was a most lovely lady, who was always liked and respected by all, everywhere she would go. When we were growing up in our junior high and senior high classes, she ALWAYS had a radiant smile on her face, and it was the very same at our 50th high school reunion in the summer of 2018, where I enjoyed catching up with her. Prayers for her whole family, especially those sweet grandkids—–so glad they could spend a few years receiving her love.

With extreme thoughts of sympathy.

Condolence from Clint Hancock on December 7th, 2021 10:25 am

Nancy was one of my favorite teachers at University Junior High. She was a very special teacher and person. I have fond memories of her and time I spent in her classroom was special to me. I must admit I was not aware of what an accomplished life she led. My respect for her is even greater now. We connected on Facebook later in life and she had so many kind and complimentary things to share with me. It meant a great deal to me to hear these things. Coincidence or not, the fact that her son is named Clint gives me great honor. I know she meant so much to so many and will be greatly missed. Thank you, Nancy, for being such a wonderful influence in my life. I am blessed to have known you.

Condolence from Donna Johnson on December 7th, 2021 4:55 pm

Bob, Clint, and Family, although I didn’t know Nancy personally, I knew she was Annette and Elmer’s daughter. My mother, Eugenia Mitchiner Johnson, spoke fondly of Annette and Elmer as long as I can remember. Mom told stories of her happy times in childhood
with Annette and her sisters. You’re in my thoughts and prayers for comfort and peace during this difficult time. God be with you! Donna Johnson

Condolence from Scott Hudson on December 8th, 2021 5:38 pm

Clint, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this heartfelt time. Your mother seemed like a real sweet Christian lady and I know she loved you very much. I know she will be deeply missed. I remember seeing you both together sometimes when I would attend Baylor basketball games. I know what it’s like to be an only child and a mothers love never fades whether they are in our presence or not. I will be thinking of your family during this difficult time and may the Lord give you strength in the days ahead. I appreciate all the times you say hello to my mom when you see her out and about. I attended school with you when we were little at Viking Hills. God Bless you Clint.

Condolence from Donna Zemanek on December 9th, 2021 10:21 pm

Bob, Clint and family,
I am devastated to read about Nancy. I was blessed to know her all my life at Columbus Avenue Baptist, and later years at school. She was the sweetest of souls, with the most beautiful smile.
When we returned to Waco in 2001 it was such a nice surprise to find that working for Waco ISD I would be able to see her on visits to Lake Air MS. I enjoyed our reminiscing, catching up and hearing all about Clint, with earlier stories having come from Annette via my mom. We still quote your “just don’t do nothing” response to Annette’s rocking and singing. Precious memories.
I am glad to have seen y’all at Guess BBQ at lunch some time back and look forward to seeing Nancy again in Heaven and spending eternity with her, our loved ones and our Jesus.
God be with you,
Donna Adams Zemanek

Condolence from Patricia Warneke Patterson on December 10th, 2021 1:22 pm

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

I worked with Nancy for a few years every summer with the City of Waco Summer Youth Program. We had some wonderful times and Nancy and I simply lost touch with one another when I moved to Austin over 35 years ago. She was an outstanding teacher and worked so well with all of the children we served each and everyday. Her sense of humor got us through quite a few ordeals. She was truly a special person!

Condolence from Jan Marstaller Coleman on December 10th, 2021 4:01 pm

So sorry to hear of Nancy’s passing. I have known her most of my life. Church. High school and on. She was such a sweet person. She will be missed by many.

Condolence from Michael Fick on December 15th, 2021 11:41 am

I was chagrined to hear of Nancy’s passing. I grew up with Nancy starting in my elementary years, all the way through high school, and also attended the same church. She was such a sweet person and has overcome challenges with such grace and aplomb. Her accomplishments were many, and she was held in such a high esteem with everyone who knew her.

I know she will be dearly missed. I wish the family the best during what must be a difficult time. Bless you all.
