Maurice Robert, 69, of Waco, went to be with his Heavenly Father on Monday July, 27, 2020 at his home.
A private service will be held at a later date.
Maurice was born March 13, 1951, in Waco, to Calvin Maurice Robert and Roberta McElyea. He was well-known for his love of sports, to include baseball and golf. He attended Richfield High School where he excelled in baseball. Maurice then entered McLennan Community College where he won many awards. He eventually played professional baseball.
Later, he became a Police Officer with the Waco Police Department. He also taught golf in the Dallas/Fort Worth area and had many friends all over the state. Maurice then joined the McLennan County Sheriff’s Department as a Deputy Sheriff and after many years of dedicated service, he retired after a long career in law enforcement.
His love of cars, motorcycles and boats brought him into contact with many people and his good nature made him their friend. His proudest moments were having his one son, Shane Robert, and three grandchildren, whom he loved with all of his heart. He will be missed by his many friends especially his high school friends.
He was preceeded in death by his wife, Taryn Robert; and his parents.
Maurice is survived by his son, Shane Robert and wife, April, of Flower Mound; three grandchildren, Abigail, Calvin and Maverick Robert. He is also survived by two close cousins, Edward McElyea and wife, Janet, and Kathy McElyea of Waco. Rest comfortably, “Big Mo”.

I was glad to have known Maurice Robert. He could always make those around him smile. He warmed the hearts of many. He will be missed.
I believe every community has a legendary character who is the subject of outrageous stories, but all those stories are based in first hand knowledge and are true. Maurice Robert was just that type of legend.
He was the first baseball All-American at McLennan Community College and still holds the all time best season batting average of .500 ( 40 for 80 ) and had a slugging percentage that year ( 1971 ) of .971, that too is still a school record. He was removed from a game by his coach for hitting a home run (after the coach gave him the signal to bunt). An opposing team attempted to intentionally walk him, only to throw one pitch too close that he hit it out to the park.
After a brief attempt at minor league baseball, Mo became a patrolman with the Waco Police Department. His career in law enforcement continued until his retirement as a Jailer at the “Harwell Hilton”.
While a member of the Waco Police Department, he and fellow officer Fred Rhea qualified for the Police Olympics in golf. His ability on the golf course became just a legendary as his baseball exploits because he was always in demand as a scramble partner. I know at least twice he was part of the winning foursome at the annual MCC Golf Tournament.
He was always a very polite gentleman and good friend. I will miss him dearly and will continue telling the true stories of his legend.
I am devastated. Maurice was the same dear sweet smiling gentle soul from the first time I met him at Brook Avenue Elementary in Sept 1957 through the last time I saw him at the closing of our 50th RHS’69 reunion in Jun 2019. We had a long visit that day; and I will always treasure the time with him. I know his dad and mom are thrilled to have their treasured son with them once again. My mom will no doubt remind him of her favorite of his innocent pranks, calling my name at lunch to blow black pepper in my face & when Roy Nash demanded to know what he had done to me, he blew some in his face, too. He and Roy will be a pair in Heaven, as they were here. I can’t wait to see them both again. Godspeed my dear friend, Donna Adams Zemanek
I haven’t seen Big Mo in several years but I never remember ever seeing him without a smile… his easy going personality put everyone at ease… hit ’em straight Mo and I’ll see you again one day!

I knew Mo from Calvary Assembly Of God Church back in the early 80’s. He was a really loving person. I remember him playing on the church softball team. Also he was real good at playing golf! I will miss his smiles and one liners we shared on facebook. But one thing for sure I will see you again in glory. Blessings and prayers for the family!!

One of the good guys taken way too soon! Maurice was a kind hearted wonderful person who could make anyone’s day better. He often played in our Hewitt Chamber Golf Tournaments and we always knew which team would come in first – if you had the pleasure of having Maurice on your team – you’re a winner!! Rest easy sir and enjoy the courses in heaven!
Maurice was a great friend to all who knew him. His love for sports was only part of the story; his career as a Law Enforcement Officer made him many, many Friends. I loved working with him and playing sports with him. He was always lighthearted and such a character! You will be missed, Mo!

Maurice an I Have Been Friends For A Long Time. We played Baseball against each other and with each other. We worked together at the Sheriff’s Dept. Played golf. He Was Always laughing and smiling. Never had anything bad to say about anyone. He was Just A great guy and all around Good person. I will miss him greatly. Gone way too soon.
What a nice guy!! Rest in Peace.

What a great friend and great all around guy! I loved competing with and against him! Great athlete and most of all a great and kind person! I will never forget the times he would drive up into my dad’s driveway on Hanover and just shoot the breeze! I will miss him and his bigger than life personality⚾️👍
In 1985 l started the Hewitt Chamber of Commerce
Golf tournament and when my cousin Mo tried to sign up, I wouldn’t let him play. That’s how good he was.

Mo was the City Golfing Champion in Waco in 4 different decades! He was simply the best ball striker that I ever saw. Period!
I always looked forward to getting an opportunity to play with him when I came through town. Always a pleasure.

I knew Maurice all my life, If you knew Maurice you loved Maurice ! As others have stated in their posts that “Mo” was a great athlete, one of the best I’ve ever known, but he was a better friend and person that LOVED JESUS and his family. Shane he loved you dearly. He never met a stranger and put others before himself. He was funny and light hearted but don’t be fooled by that easy going kind and loving demeanor, he was a COMPETITOR that loved to compete and win, which he did a lot of in his lifetime, most of the stories of great accomplishments are true and amazing. I loved him dearly, what a great man, what a great friend!!! I could go on and on, but the bottom line is YOU WERE LOVED AND WILL TRULY BE MISSED – REST IN PEACE
Loved the guy. Hadn’t spoken to him in years and called him a couple weeks ago. Had a long, great conversation. May he rejoice for eternity with Jesus Christ.
Anyone who played any golf at all in the Waco area knew who Big Mo was. If you were fortunate enough to spend a day on the course with him, you left happier than when you came because of the kind ,gentle and fun loving nature of Mo. You definitely saw some exceptional golf but,most of all, you met and got to know an exceptional man. I was blessed to share some great golf times with my friend Mo. You left this world with powerful legacy of of how to live one’s life and I am a better person for having known you. May you rest in God’s perfect peace and am sure you are playing on Heaven’s Augusta National. Save me a spot!!
My buddy Mo. I will surely miss all the times we spent on and off the golf coarse. It was always better to have you on my team than to play against you. You were that a one of a kind person that never met a stranger and the person everyone seemed to know. I always knew where you stood with your faith in Jesus. You are the only person that I have ever heard quote scripture on the golf coarse. Thank you for all the good times and most of all for being my friend. I will miss you.

Maurice was one of those guys we all looked up to. An exceptional athlete across a variety of sports, he was so much more than that. You never left an encounter with Mo without a smile on your face and feeling better about yourself having seen him. One of my funny memories of Maurice was during a Richfield basketball game when he split his pants. He never missed a beat. You will be missed, my friend.
May you rest in peace my friend. Knew you since we were growing up together. May your family be at peace in this time of sorrow. You were one of kind. I’ll never will forget you my brother.

Condolences to the Robert family. Maurice was one of the first athletes I coached in my coaching career at West Jr High. Later coached Maurice in the Sunday League baseball at the Mutualist Baseball team. Maurice was a Big Time slugger. He brought a lot of character to any team he played with. Mo was a Good One. My deepest condolences!! I grew up across the street from Maurice & in recent years him & Taryn would do things for my mom & check in on her daily. He was a very kind man who would help in any way he could. I have memories of him wsy back to my childhood. He will be greatly missed .
I didn’t know Maurice well and I regret that. Whenever our paths did cross, Big Mo always spoke to me as if I were an old friend. I admired him and his abilities greatly. Rest in peace Mo. Know that you set a great example for the rest of us to live by.
I met Maurice Robert way back in the middle 1970’s through a mutual friend at the Chevrolet Dealership in McGregor, Texas!! I immediately knew he was a man with special talents, because of his special Name!! And he was entered into a Long Ball Golfing Contest!! Which I had never heard of!! But, I later found out that he had placed in the Top Ten in the contest!! And he was a fun guy to have met, and got to have talked to!! And, I lost contact with him over the years, because I changed jobs!! But, from what have read here, I guess that I had him figured out very well!! Thoughts/Condolences/Prayers to his Family, and many Friends!! I have been blessed to have known Maurice for a short time, but a lot of years!! Rest In Peace Maurice!! Please remember all of the good/fun times that we have had over the years!! GOD bless ‘each’ of you!! What a guy!! What a man!! And he will be missed by many!!
Being a month apart in age, we knew each other most of our lives. Have a fond memory of catching warm-up for him at Northern LL field with his father near and saying “dodgammit” constantly when we cut up. We were lifelong friends that stayed in contact throughout. We went through many joys and heartaches together.
The class of 69 has lost one of its best-but ah! the memories…

I too, was a product of Northern Little League and this guy scared me to death when he was pitching! Later we played years of softball against each other, Some of the balls he hit are most likely still in orbit! A truly gifted natural athlete. Most of all Maurice was one of the kindest people you’d ever want to meet. Literally, the guy to give you the shirt off his back. Rest in peace Big Mo, you made a difference.
I worked with Maurice at the McLennan County Jail. He was such a great person to work with and always had a positive attitude. He really had Godly principles. We were working a wing together the day of 9/11. Such a great man. He will be missed!.
MY HEART TOO IS BROKEN. MO WAS ONE OF THOSE PEOPLE YOU KNOW ALL YOUR LIFE AND EVERY TIME YOU WOULD RUN INTO HIM IT WAS JUST LIKE YOU SAW HIM YESTERDAY… HE WAS JUST THAT MUCH OF A FRIEND TO EVERYONE. I knew Maurice back in the 70’s when the SlowPitch Softball Leagues first got started. We all got started about the same time….Billy Jones, Kirby Brink, Mike Eskew, Paul Ashby, Jim Smith….man, could he hit the homeruns. At the ballparks at 15th and Dutton, not only did he hit the ball over the fence but also over the huge pecan trees on the other side of the fence. He was one of a kind.

rt is broken. I have know Mo since 1956 and have had many wonderful encounters with him in the last few years. God blessed him with many talents and being friendly to all was one of those.
