I was from the class of ‘71 at Connally and knew Scooter so well. So many sweet memories linger of our younger days and they flood my heart and soul to this very day. He had this crazy chuckle and an almost mischievous type smile. I’m so terribly sorry for yours and as well as our loss. — Jamey

Scooter was a great teammate and friend to us younger guys in the CHS class of ‘74. No nonsense or complaining on or off the field. In ‘72 he hit two home runs with 4 rbi to beat Heavily favored Robinson 6-5 for the district championship. I mention this as as he had a deep love for the game and was so involved in all volunteer phases his entire life. He bled blue and gray and will be greatly missed but never forgotten!

Met Scooter while working at Connally Elem after school program , We taught in the same class, He became a great friend ( kids in our class knew him as my day time husband (Private joke). I’m from the class of ’74 at Connally High School in Waco and remember him being a fun and friendly guy (and a great athlete). I also just saw him in December 2019 at surprise birthday party in Waco and we had a nice conversation while sitting at a table at George’s Restaurant. Praying for his family during this difficult time.

I knew Scooter all his life. He grew up playing catcher during the little league days and continued in high school as one of the best players in Connally baseball history. Scooter greeted his friends with a warm smile and a big hug or handshake. He loved to watch his children compete in any activity. Scooter will be missed by all those who knew him. I’m saddened to hear of Scooter’s passing. I’ve known Scooter since our days at Connally High School. He was always one of those who offered help and encouragement to the younger kids and was never too busy to teach his baseball skills. Scooter was the best and most competitive baseball catcher I’ve ever known. I also had the joy of working with Scooter later at Connally ISD. As always Scooter was a true friend and would stop by to talk. He would stop and help anyone even if he was busy with something else. He always had something to laugh about and had a smile on his face regardless how the day was going, good or bad. Scooter was a dear friend and my condolences go out to the his family. I’m sure he is already suited up and behind home plate. Rest easy my friend, you will not be forgotten.

Scooter and I were good friends and teammates in high school I was class of 71 and him of 72 Scooter was the catcher on the baseball team my Sr year he was the only starting Jr that year He loved baseball and was very good I will never forget all the good times we had RIP my friend

Laine Family,
We are so very sorry for your loss! A little over 10 years ago when we moved back to Lakeview, the boys would ride the bus to/from school. We would see Scooter in the early mornings and he always said Hi. In the afternoons, I would call or stop by the house to check on the boys and they wouldn’t be home off the bus yet. In a panic, I was calling the school and all over looking for them. When I finally saw them walking down the street laughing like little boys do, I was relieved, but yelled at them for scaring me so badly. When I asked, “where in the world have y’all been for 45 minutes?!” They replied, “ Mr. Scooter’s house!!” From that point forward I told them to just call me when they got home because I knew they had formed a special friendship. I knew he would look after them anytime he saw them no matter where they were. We are deeply saddened by his passing, especially Trevlyn. He will be able to carry those memories with him and the stories will be talked about between the boys for years to come. Thank y’all for sharing him with us. He was truly great!

Thoughts and prayers of blessings and comfort to your family. Scooter coached our son Richard at Lakeview Little League, later he helped Roy with some of our rentals there in the Lakeview area and while I was teaching at Connally he worked in the warehouse. Always enjoyed visiting with him. Loved his infectious smile. We are saddened by his death. He definitely holds a special place in the heart of many and will be missed.

I was terribly shocked yesterday when I heard of Scooters passing. Scooter was my brother-in-law many years ago. I have fond memories of the younger years of our adult life. Lots of Love for his two sons: Kevin and Allen, as well as his father: Jack Laine. I just found out about Mr. Scooter tuesday. Mr. Scooter was an amazing person who touched millions of heart through out our school at Connally Intermidiate. I remember as a kiddo Mr. Scooter was always working hard and always had a smile and interacted with every student and teacher. I will always remember him and will miss him. He was an amazing person, Mr. Scooter touched my heart and soul, he showed me that you can affect people just by your kindness and your smile and positive attitude. He will always be remembered and will always be missed.
