Mark Kent Lumley “Coach Lum”, retired Baylor Softball Coach, passed away after a long battle with cancer Sunday, December 27, 2020.
Celebration of Life: 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 30, at Meadowbrook Baptist Church, 1207 N. Old Robinson Rd., in Robinson with Dr. Cary Killough officiating
Mark Kent Lumley (Coach Lum), retired Baylor University Softball Coach, passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer on December 27, 2020. A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, December 30 at 11am at Meadowbrook Baptist Church. Dr. Cary Killough will officiate.
Due to COVID-19 limited seating is available. Everyone is required to wear a mask while inside the church building and social distancing must be observed. Mark was born November 21, 1955 in Ironton, Ohio. As a child, he moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where he grew up and graduated from Central High School. During his childhood, he was blessed by a loving couple, Bob and Linda Wise, who he aspired to grow up and be like because Bob was an amazing coach with a beautiful wife. Coach Wise made a tremendous impact on Mark and his best friends: Jim Morley, Pat McCormick and Don Beaudry. After high school, he moved to Tucson, where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Arizona.
Coaching became his life. Coach Lum spent 13 years teaching and coaching at Flowing Wells High School in Tucson, Arizona, where he led the softball team to state in 1993 and 1997. He coached the Caballeros to a No. 5 final national ranking by USA Today in 1997. He was named the 1998 Arizona Coaches Association Coach of the Year. In 2014, he was inducted into the Flowing Wells High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
In 1998, Coach Glenn Moore brought Lumley to LSU to coach alongside him. In two seasons, Lum guided his hitters to a final ranking of 21st in the NCAA in 1999 and No. 8 in 2000.
Lumley came to Baylor in 2000, with Coach Moore. In his 20-year career assisting Moore with the Baylor Softball team, he made four world series appearances, coached many All-Americans, and traveled around the world with FCA on numerous mission trips. As Lum would say, “I am living the dream.”
In 2005 and 2006, Lumley was recognized for his outstanding work by USA Softball. As assistant coach with Team USA, he helped lead the team to a gold medal at the 2006 World University Games.
With all his coaching accomplishments, Lum’s proudest moments in life were when students accepted Christ into their lives. He led hundreds of young people to the Lord. He knew that ultimately that was how his time on earth should be spent so that he would see them again in heaven one day.
On December 28, 2012, Mark married the love of his life, Stacey, and gained three sons. Their family is actively involved at Meadowbrook Baptist Church in Robinson.
Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Crystal Arnold, three brothers, three sisters and father-in-law, Jimmy Fielding.
Lum leaves behind his loving wife, Stacey; sons, Mason and DJ of Robinson, Trey and wife, Emily, of Ramstein, Germany; mothers in-law, Rhonda Fielding and Ginger Tindell of Waco; father in-law, Stan Tindell of Waco; numerous sister in-laws, brother in-laws, nieces and nephews, including his closest nephew, Mike Arnold and wife Debbie, of Windham, Maine. He also leaves behind his Baylor University family, including his best friends and brother and sister in Christ, Glenn Moore and Britni Newman.
A special thank you to Pam Lumley for staying by Mark’s side through each battle with cancer.

miss him a lot and have a lot of memories of him when we came to baylor to a Baylor softball tournments.

What a blessing Mark was to so many people, including me, as I helped care for him in his last weeks. I thank Stacey and family for the honor of allowing me, and the entire Providence Hospice team to assist in preparing him for his final journey home. I will always remember his beautiful prayers.

What a gift our fish dinner date was where I got to meet Mark! I loved how he lit up talking about how he and Stacy met and how God led him along his coaching journey. Great love is a true inspiration and it is an honor to have had these moments. My heart goes out to you. I was reading an article regarding recent passing and was directed to the obituary for Mark. It was really well written and shows he was a fine man.
I did not know him.
My wife and I are dealing with the recent passing of her mother and it is not easy.

Mr Lumley was my freshman social studies teacher at FWHS. Shyly I approached him to ask if I could be in the AP class. He accepted me without hesitation. It was one of the few classes I got an A in. He saw part my troubled life and let me be me. He was one of the few teachers of them all that inspired me to be a better person. It saddens me to learn this. His legacy will endure through all of us who were able to address him as Mr. or coach. There are people who make the world a better place, he was one. You will always be a part of my story. May God ease the pain of his passing, but take heart dear readers, and let the knowledge you knew a truly good soul carry you through
