Margaret Carol Byrd was born June 13, 1951, in Phenix City, Alabama to Harry Galey Byrd and Margaret Alice (Sloan) Byrd. She was raised by her mother and her stepfather, Richard L. Simon. The Simon family’s strong spiritual beliefs caused them to move to Waco in 1962 to attend Grace Gospel Church. While in school here, she met here two best lifelong friends: Janice Braswell and Diane Atlas.

Carol graduated from Waco High School in 1969 and obtained her Associates degree in law enforcement at McLennan Community College. Not long after high school, she got a job as a typist at the Waco Police Department. She then became a police dispatcher. She attended the Police Academy in 1974 and was joined by another female officer, Monte Allison. They were the first female officers to ever work in the Uniformed Patrol Division. Even though Carol and Monte always came in last in the running portion of physical training, they persevered and never gave up. Their success blazed the trail for all future female officers.

She met the love of her life, Randall “Randy” Aleman, a Police Cadet, after meeting at the Waco Police Department. They were married on September 19, 1975. They were the first married officer couple at Waco PD in 1976.

The Aleman family attended Bethesda Bible Church, Church on the Rock and Life Church while living here. Their first child, Heather, was born in 1979. While pregnant with Scott, Carol left Waco PD to be a fulltime mom in 1981. Carol had two close calls with serious illness and injury. She survived breast cancer in 1995 and a very, very bad injury in 2017 while in Branson, Missouri. The family was grateful to God for getting her through those challenges and giving her many more years with her family.

In about 1999, Carol returned to the workforce as a police dispatcher for the Baylor Department of Public Safety. She developed special friendships while there, retiring in January of 2015.

While she was not working or taking care of her family, Carol enjoyed watching Lady Bear basketball games, going to garage sales, travelling, scrapbooking, playing Hand & Foot with her card group and watching her sister’s stitching videos on YouTube.

Carol was a great wife, homemaker and a fantastic cook (just like her mom). Her proudest accomplishment was the birth of her children: Heather and Scott. She truly enjoyed raising them over the years, seeing them grow up as responsible adults. Her faith and salvation were the most important thing to Carol other than the love, safety and well-being of her family. Carol expressed to Randy several times that she hopes all her family and friends who do not know Jesus Christ as their personal Savior consider, if they so choose, the eternal life that is available to them.

Carol was preceded in death by her parents, stepfather, and sister, Sharon (Simon) Gonzalez; and the family’s beloved Italian Greyhound, Pippi.

Those left behind to cherish her memory include her husband, Randall “Randy” Aleman of Waco; daughter, Heather Aleman of Brookhaven, Mississippi; son, Matthew “Scott” Aleman of Dallas; brothers, Russ Simon of Dallas; Mark Simon and wife Bonnie of Corsicana; nephew Mark “Tyson” Johnson,  wife Jennifer and their daughter Natalee of Haltom City; sister-in-law, Ann Aleman of Harahan, Louisiana; sister-in-law, Christy Abernathy and husband Sam of West; lifelong friends, Janice Braswell and Diane Atlas, in addition to numerous nieces, nephews and many friends.

Carol is survived by these siblings from the Byrd family, Amy Y. Thompson and husband Dustin of St. George, Utah; Richard (Byrd) Krebs of Foley, Alabama and Michael (Byrd) Krebs and wife Ronda of Walnut Hill, Florida; first cousins from the Sloan family: Tracy Mitchell, Lisa Atcher and Richard Sloan; and her stepmother, Wanda Simon and her beautiful family.

A special love is also sent out to cousins Homer and Jan Miller of Sunset Hills, Missouri.

Memorials may be made in her honor to the Care Net Pregnancy Center of Waco, Waco Right to Life or a charity of your choice.

Condolence Messages

  1. It is with a heavy heart that I bid farewell to an exceptional lady and truly a lifelong friend. Her and Randy(and their kids) truly have been closer than family in many ways to Janice and myself.

We have gone to church together, vacationed together on numerous occasions and been their for one another during life’s peaks and valleys!

Perhaps my favorite memories of Carol were the many trips our families made together to the HEB lodge in Kerrville, TX where we stayed at “The Rock House”. She loved to sit on the back porch in the evenings and watch the deer pass through from the hills down to the creek on the property!

I cannot imagine our lives without the richness Carol brought to our family! We thank God for the privilege of being her friends!

Sweet friend, it is so comforting to know you are with Jesus now in Heaven rejoicing! We will see you again some day!

    With all my love,

    Bill

  8. Karen L.Bentsen

Carol was one of my dearest friends. Even though it has been many years since I have seen her, we have continued to communicate through cards. Truly one of the most awesome people I have ever known. I know she will be happy to be with the Lord.

  9. My deepest condolence to you and your family. My prayer for you is that God would give you his peace and comfort during this time of sorrow for you and your family. May you feel his presence during this difficult time.
I remember Carol from when I was a cadet when I started in 1976. She always had a smile and willing to talk about her job.

  10. I met Carol and Randy years ago when they entrusted me to take care of their beloved little Greyhound “Pippi”. Carol made such an impression on me because she was always so kind and had such a positive outlook on life. She was also very quick-witted and I so enjoyed laughing with her, sometimes at Randy’s expense… I will definitely miss her!!!!! However, it is some consolation that now she is in heaven reunited with her beloved Pippi.

  11. My condolences to Randy, Heather, Scott, all the family and dear friends. I met Carol at Church on The Rock in Waco. No doubt Carol’s prayers helped sustain me as a missionary in Belize. She would always tell me; it is just too hot for me to travel there! She loved everyone so much. Beautiful lady who loved the Lord with all her heart. I can’t believe you are gone; however, we are all assured you are now in your heavenly home.

  12. Carol and Randy are two of the most generous people in the world and I thank God to be accepted in their family as of 12 years ago. We know Carol and her Dad, Richard Simon, are in the presence of the Lord Jesus. They are completely well and enjoying other Believers who have gone on before them. Randy, you have loved Carol and your Children well.

  13. I met this beautiful woman while working at Baylor PD. She and I became fast friends and remained that way until her departure. Her husband and her daughter are also wonderful people that I have had the pleasure of being around and enjoying their presence. I haven’t had the chance to meet Scott yet, in person. Carol will definitely be missed but I know that death is a beautiful thing when we die in the Lord. I look forward to seeing her again.

  14. Randy and Family, I am so sorry to learn of your loss. Carol’s life of service to others is impressive and she will be missed by family and the community. Bless you and your family.

  15. To Randy and family..I am so sorry for your loss. May the Lord wrap you in His arms during this difficult time.

  16. And he said to him, “Truly, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.” Luke 23:43

My family’s prayers are with Carol’s family in this time of heartbreak and grief.

  19. Carol came into my life through Diane Atlas! We gathered together to scrapbook, share stories and make new memories! I really enjoyed watching the love and respect that Carol and Diane had during their friendship when we were all together! God Bless!

  20. II Timothy 4:7-11
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith! Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

This passage applies to well to Carol. Our prayers continue for Randy, Heather and Scott. May God’s Word comfort and encourage in this difficult time.

All our love, The Shearouse Family

Carol, Thankful i found you through ancestry, com , we shared a Father , but you told me Your Stepfather was the only real Dad you knew .. I do wish i would have gotten to know you years sooner …We talked and texted several times , You were kind , sweet and always full of joy. You helped me through an emotional break up with a girlfriend by offering support and advice, i will always appreciate that My regret is we never got to meet as adults though you did see me one time when i was maybe 4 or 5. at our Grandmothers house .. Heaven has gained a most worthwhile resident…

  24. There are people who come into our lives, who shower us with love, kindness, compassion and gentleness; whose hugs warm and comfort – we will cherish you always.

  25. Aunt Carol was such a loving and beautiful person, so kind and giving, and I loved hearing her laugh or say…”Oh Randy”! I am sorry I could not be there today, but I am there in love and spirit.
My heart and prayers go out to all of you.
    Love, Cindi

  26. Bradley and Terriann Prenevost

We were shocked to hear of Carol’s passing. I just happened to be at the hospital the day she was admitted and spoke with her briefly. We were hoping to get together for another game of crazy canasta, like we had played with the Aleman’s and Braswells many nights during our days of our fellowship together at COTR. We will forever remember Carol and her gentle, caring spirit. May our gracious Heavenly Father grant Randy, Heather, Scott and family the peace that passes all understanding. Beautiful service we watched online.

  27. Randy, Heather and Scott,
Y’all have been in my thoughts and prayers. I was sorry to hear about Carol. She no doubt is in Heaven. I am thankful to have known her and Randy. Carol was such a sweet person. She will be missed by many people.
