Larry Glynn Lafferty, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and bass player, passed away Friday, June 3, 2022 after a lengthy illness.
Visitation: 5 – 7PM Wednesday, June 8 at Lake Shore Funeral Home Chapel. Private graveside service Thursday, June 9.
Larry was born December 9, 1954 to Robert Lee Lafferty and Ernestine Bessire Lafferty. He attended school in Waco, Texas, graduating from Richfield High School in 1973. He went on to earn his associate degree from TSTI in Waco, concentrating on auto mechanics which he loved. Larry and his one and only love, Beverly Dyer, enjoyed nearly 50 years together until being separated by his death.
Larry worked at various local car dealerships before going to work at Holt Cat in Waco where he worked for approximately 16 years. He retired from Holt Cat in 2017.
Larry had a love of music and was one of the most accomplished bass players ever in the Waco music community. His nickname was “Low End Lafferty” due to playing bass as his musical instrument of choice. Larry enjoyed many years of playing in the band, Hourglass, a classic rock band which gained great popularity in Waco and around the state. Those years of friendship and camaraderie with his Hourglass band mates were priceless to Larry. For a man who was a real introvert, Larry could belt out a ZZ Top song like few others could, a fact that can be attested to by anyone who ever heard him perform.
Larry was a man of many talents and interests, including woodworking and reading, in addition to his music. Those who had the luck to spend time with him knew that he possessed a devilishly sarcastic sense of humor that he thoroughly enjoyed displaying. Larry was a devoted husband to Beverly, and she was a devoted wife to him. They were a perfect example of what love between a couple looks like in real life. Nothing in Larry’s life meant as much to him as his family.
In addition to his wife Beverly, Larry is survived by two sons, Christopher Guerra and Joshua Lafferty and wife Deirdre. Larry was “Pawpaw” to grandchildren, Justin Guerra, Matthew Guerra, Ariana Guerra, Mia Lafferty, Robert Lafferty; great-granddaughter, Sophia Guerra. Others left to cherish his memory include his brother, Robert Lafferty; sister, Merrilee Harmon Dunnam and husband Vance; and Larry’s faithful four-legged companion, Riley.
Loved ones preceding Larry in death include his grandson, Justin Guerra; parents, Robert and Ernestine Lafferty; and brothers, Danny Lafferty, Alan Lafferty, and Barry Lafferty.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Robert Wolff and M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Texas Oncology-Horizon Circle in Waco and Jim Dunnam for their assistance and support for Larry and the family during this difficult journey.
In lieu of flowers, the family has designated M.D. Anderson Medical Center or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital for charitable remembrances on Larry’s behalf.

My sweet Bev..I’m so sorry for your loss..You and Larry really did have a love story marriage..sure yall went through trials and tribulations but through it all yall had each other…Bev the love and care that you gave Larry was beautiful..I know through the tears ..you always was strong and I know that was hard..Larry loved you so hard.. My condolences to Bev and the family. I didn’t know Larry well but we had 3 things in common, we were life-long bass players, we were both from Waco and we both graduated from Richfield, he in ’73 and me in ’75. In spring of ’74 i had the rental unit next to his behind Ray Henning’s Music on Franklin. I listened to him and Danny Thorpe many hours as they practiced. RIP Larry.

I so admired Larry’s talents, his wry humor that could sneak up on one, his warrior approach to his illness & especially his devotion to his family.

Oh Beverly, I am so sorry for the loss of Larry. He was absolutely one of the good ones and will always be remembered that way. I am thinking of you and the family and if there is anything I can do please call. I hope you know how much we have always loved you and Larry and are a part of a large group who will dearly miss him.

I just today became aware of Larry’s passing. I knew Larry and Barry since our time attending North Junior High and considered them good friends and have many fond memories of the adventures we shared on camping excursions at Lake Waco, swimming at Hogg Creek and under Lake Shore Drive bridge. And many other experiences all the way to listening to Larry play in the bands he was a part of from “Okie Dabney and the Country Diamonds” to “Hourglass”. I extend my sincere condolences to Beverly, Chris, Josh, Bob, Merrilee, and all the family I haven’t had the opportunity to meet. Know you are all in my thoughts.
