George Robert “Bob” Scott III

George Robert “Bob” Scott III, also known as “Bosco”, passed away at his residence in Waco, Texas on October 8, 2024, following a 22-month battle with Merkel Cell carcinoma. In the days and weeks prior to his death, he was blessed to have a host of friends comforting him with visits, prayers, guitar music and song.

Bob was born on October 31, 1955, in Killeen, Texas. He graduated from Richfield High School in 1974, lettering in varsity basketball. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Graphic Arts from The University of Texas in Austin.

For approximately twenty years, he was a Graphic Artist in San Francisco, California and Austin, Texas. He had a special interest in the music industry and designed an album cover for Neil Young and the Bluenotes, titled “This Note’s For You.” He designed the promotional poster for Willie Nelson’s Farm Aid Fourth of July Picnic in 1986 and an album cover for Gary P. Nunn in 1983.

In the early 2000’s, he relocated to Key West, Florida and became a Stage Assistant for Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reef Band. While in Key West, he perfected his own guitar and singing skills and began performing Tropical Island style music gigs at local restaurants and bars.

In 2015, he returned to his hometown of Waco and began playing at local venues. He entertained audiences not only with his music, but also with stories of his adventurous life, including experiencing earthquakes in Northern California, shark attacks while sailing, rubbing shoulders with famous musicians and songwriters and being in Washington, DC and witnessing the scene at the Pentagon only 20 minutes after the 9/11 event occurred in 2001.  Bob was creative, funny, talented, a rare free thinker and generous with others, although often beyond his means. He was easy-going most of the time. In opposition to the mask mandate, he carried a clean pair of men’s underwear in his pocket to use as a face covering when the enforcement became too heated. On Halloween night of 2023, while playing a gig at the Blue Pup, after having lost a full head of hair to radiation treatment, he used a solar light bulb in his mouth to portray himself as “Uncle Fester.”

A special acknowledgement and thank you goes out to Doyle Grisham, Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reef Band’s pedal steel guitar player since 1999, who shared his time and talent with Bob over the past two years by editing and adding pedal steel guitar for a CD of original music Bob had composed. Doyle’s efforts and friendship and interest in the project provided a welcome diversion to Bob during a very difficult time in his life.

Bob’s last audience of nurses and caregivers certainly deserves recognition as well. Nurses Leslie and Jessica from Amedisys Hospice and Caregivers Rebecca, Brandy and Austin from Right at Home all provided excellent care. In spite of some cantankerous moments, they were very quickly endeared to his keen sense of humor and the entertaining stories he loved to share. That, along with witnessing the communal spirit of friends and neighbors willing to help Bob remain at home in his final days likely made him a memorable patient among many. Their kindness and patience are very much appreciated.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, George Robert Scott, Jr. and Rochelle Walters Scott and a sister, Debra Scott Kelinske. He is survived by nephews, Daniel Kelinske and Joshua Kelinske; and niece, Candice Kelinske-Dibble. He is also survived by his most recent rescue kitty, “The Mooch.”

At his request, no service or burial will take place. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, from 4-6 pm at the Blue Pup in Waco, Texas. All friends, fans and even foes are invited to attend.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-2

“To everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted.”

Condolence Messages

  1. No one was like Bob. I will very much miss him. I also want to thank Cathy Bradshaw, Evan Klaras, Denise Tucker, and our other amazing friends from high school for caring for him and entertaining him in his last days. There’s nothing like old friends! Of course, maybe we’re getting a little too old, but whatever. We will all miss Bob and his humor and general crazy fun comportment.

  2. William (Bill) Porter

I’ve known Bob since we were in the fifth grade at Hillcrest Elementary. We were close during all those years up through high school at Richfield. I re-established contact with Bob shortly after I returned to Waco back in March 2020. We saw a number of his performances at the Blue Dog Saloon. He was one of those people that you could always count on to be in your corner whenever you needed him. Those were the last words that I spoke to him just a few days before he passed: “I’m in your corner.” Now he is with the Lord in Heaven where there Is no more pain, sadness, or suffering. Sing on Bob, for all eternity… and we’ll all reunite with you soon!

  3. I’ll never forget the first time I met Bob. My friend Boyd Williams ask me several times if I knew Bosco. I was like, what’s a Bosco? We were at Lake Air basketball practice. I was on the eight grade end of the gym, he on the ninth grade end. I saw this guy with droopy socks and gold suede pro keds tennis shoes. Found out later he was a huge Pistol Pete fan. I introduced myself and he said, I know who you are. You’re going to be my backup point guard when I’m a senior. From that point on we had a friendship and played a lot of pick up bb after practice. He gave me a lot of tips. Good guy, sorry for his loss. I moved away after my ninth grade year but have fond memories of Bosco, his great sense of humor, and my Waco friends
