Elizabeth Smithers was born September 26, 1928 in Franklin, Texas. She was the seventh child to Daniel and Gertrude Smithers. They lived on a farm outside of Franklin and was raised in Franklin all her life, attending Franklin schools and graduated high school in 1946.

She attended one semester of nursing school before a handsome army soldier swept her off her feet, William Taylor, and they married January 30, 1947. They had three children together. She was a housewife and mother for many years. After her three children were older, she had various jobs.

As a 15-year-old she was acquainted with William Taylor because his grandparents lived across the road. The first time William saw her, she was barefoot and chasing rabbits. They were married for 37 years before William’s death in 1984.

Elizabeth liked to read, collect dolls, and cook for her family; especially pancakes, congo squares and birthday cakes. She loved to travel and often said “Go while you can”. Her children took her on her last big trip for her 90th birthday, an Alaskan Cruise. She enjoyed activities on and off the ship. She was very active in Lakeview Baptist Church and the Rebekah Sunday School Class.

Out of nine children, she was the last surviving member of her family.

Survivors include her children, Margaret Lewis and husband Michael, John Taylor and wife Janie, and Kathleen Taylor; six grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

  5. I would’ve been about 6 years old when I met Mrs. Taylor in 1987. I remember visiting her house a few times with her grandson John Taylor around that time and in the following years. I think I even remember seeing her doll collection then.
And I remember that she was a nice lady.
I’m sure she was proud of all of you.

  6. Margaret, John and Kathy….your Mom was the sweetest lady I ever knew. I spent a lot of summers with your family and she was so sweet to all of us. She didn’t even get mad at us when we had a very bubbly bath. Hope she had some Tide left for laundry I know that she has joined a lot of our family in Heaven and we will miss her. Love to all of you.
