Davie Lee Welch, Sr., 70, of Laguna Park, passed away surrounded by his family at the VA Hospital in Temple, Thursday, September 21, 2017.

Visitation: Wednesday, October 4, 2017 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM at Lake Shore Funeral Home, 5201 Steinbeck Bend in Waco.

Funeral Service: Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 10:00AM at Lake Shore Funeral Home, 5201 Steinbeck Bend in Waco. A graveside service will follow at 1:00PM at Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery, 11463 State Highway 195, Killeen, Texas, 76542, the United States Army Honor Guard will render military honors for Davie.

Davie was born November 1, 1946 in San Antonio, Texas to the late Willie Davis and Lillie Mae Emery Welch. He attended school in the San Antonio area, deciding at a young age to join the United States Army. Davie served his country for six years in Vietnam and Germany; he was awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery in combat. While serving Davie learned what would turn out to be his lifelong trade, working as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic and finally over his own detail as a Motor Sergeant.

Davie met the love of his life, Carolyn Louise Simmons, through her cousin. They were married in October of 1966, once through a German translator and then a second time in the chapel on base. In 1970, they returned to San Antonio, where he began his career as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic with Stewart & Stevenson. Davie also worked in the San Antonio area for Waukesha Pearce, Ingram and finally HB Zachary. It was after a back injury that Davie retired, he and Carolyn moved to the Laguna Park area in 1998. Davie enjoyed cooking, hunting, fishing, building rustic furniture, working on cars and reselling them. He and Carolyn also enjoyed remodeling homes and reselling them and traveling with friends on their Honda Trike motorcycle. Davie was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Lillie Mae Welch; half-siblings, Ima Jean Welch, John A. Welch, Margie Otkin, and Willie Welch, Jr.; his brother-in-law and favorite running buddy, Johnny Japort.

Davie leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 51 years, Carolyn Welch of Laguna Park; daughter, Darla Heritage and her husband, Steven of Fort Stockton; son, Davie Welch Drake and his husband, Derrick of Coppell; siblings, Betty Japort, Lois Foust and her husband Roy, Sarah Mazur and her husband Willie and Charles Welch and his wife Mary; his half-sister, Wanda Moravitz and her husband Shelby; and half-brother, Edward Welch. Davie was the proud PawPaw to Brandi Heritage, Kelsey Heritage, and Layton Heritage and his wife Alyssa; and Great-PawPaw to Brantly Heritage, Luca Tourney and Enrique Canales, III; along with numerous other loving family members. Davie had the constant companionship of his sweet Chihuahua, Missy.

Potted plant memorials are welcome by the family.
