Ben Calderon went to be with our Lord on February 16, 2021, at the age of 88, in his hometown of Waco, TX. His battle with pulmonary fibrosis over the last few months showed his courage in facing life’s challenges. Ben loved being around people, especially family and friends.

Service Information:

Graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 23, at Oakwood Cemetery with Father Benjie as celebrant.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, February 22, at Lake Shore Funeral Home. Due to current COVID-19 mandates, masks will be required, and limited capacities will be available

As a child, Ben decided that he was not going to let his blindness hold him back. He learned that he had a passion for music and practiced day and night learning to play the guitar. His dream was to travel to Nashville and make a name for himself. He was able to realize that dream with his then wife, Lois, as they played at the Grand Ole Opry and recorded music together. He and Lois returned to Waco to raise a family, but that did not stop them from their dream as they continued to play music around Waco and nearby towns.

Ben was preceded in death by his parents, Tino and Severa Calderon; and brothers, Edward Calderon and Robert Calderon.

He is survived by his daughter, Shelley Chaney and husband, Gary Chaney; his son, Jeffrey Calderon and wife, Royetta Calderon; his grandsons, Jeffrey Calderon, Oren Woodard, and Oliver Woodard; his brothers, Ernesto Calderon and Tino Calderon; his sisters, Mary Farmer, Julia Wilhelm, and Dolores Castillo; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

The world has lost a good man. I played music with him in my dad’s band many times. Now him and daddy can make some good music in Heaven.

We knew Ben and Lois when they were in Nashville. They also came to our home in Missouri. When they visited they always brought jalapeno s for Joe! They were a fun couple. Ben was great to be around and was very talented too! We lost contact and tried to locate them but was not successful. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
