On the morning of February 21, 2016, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Manuel Alvarez, passed away with his family by his side in Waco, Texas at the age of 94. Manuel was born on January 6, 1922 to Nemencio Alvarez and Monserrate Matias in Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico. He spent many years serving as an infantryman in the United States Army during World War II, as part of the Pacific Theater earning a Bronze Star. In 1947, Manuel married Awilda Valle and later moved with his wife and children to Chicago where he worked many years for Wrigley Company. Manuel is preceded in death by his wife and leaves behind to cherish his memory his two loving daughters, Carmen Awilda Alvarez of China Spring, Texas and Norma Iris Medina of Hewitt, Texas; five grandchildren, Jose Manuel Matos and wife April, Miguel Antonio Matos, Lisette Medina, Ivan Medina, Jr. and wife Leah, and Carlos Adrian Matos; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family members of Manuel would like to express their sincere appreciation for the genuine love and caring support provided to Manuel and the family by the nurses, doctor, and support staff of Providence Hospice.

At his request, in lieu of a memorial or burial service, the family will gather for a small private celebration of his life.

Tio Manual, Thank you so much for all the gum. I know where my love for Juicy Fruit came from, from you and my Poppy. Thank you for your humor. Thank you for helping your sister Georgina (my Mommy) when we came to Chicago when we were small. These are some things I should have said to my Uncle when he was with us. I will miss him dearly as I miss all our other relatives that have passed before him. He was a caring, kind, generous person. To my Dear Cousins Norma and Carmen, know that my heart goes out to the both of you and to the rest of the family as well. My thoughts are with you. Love Chiquita

  6. I never knew my grandfathers because they passed away before I was born so I just sort of adopted my best friend’s grandpa as my own. He was always so kind and funny and will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m so sorry and am praying for God’s comfort as you grieve the loss of such a wonderful man.
