Katherine Thomas Holmes was born April 10, 1931 in the Mt. Pleasant community to Jessie and Mae Fannie Hawkins Thomas. She graduated from Rosenthal School. She confessed her belief in God, and was baptized at an early age. Katherine attended the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church. As a member, she worked with the Mission Society and Willing Workers. She was mother to one child, Jessie Earl Thomas. Katherine met and married Asa D. Holmes. The marriage was blessed to last for 49 years until she was widowed at his death on May 26, 2004.

Katherine was no stranger to hard work. As with many women of the era, Katherine earned her living as a housekeeper for several families over the years. She said frequently, “I’ve worked all my life.” She performed this work with attention to detail and was often observed by family and neighbors sweeping, both inside and outside of her home. She had a green thumb and could be found tending potted plants, bushes and hedges in her yard.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Asa D. Holmes; her sister, Cynthia Smith, her brothers: Jessie, Tyree and Willie Thomas; and two granddaughters, Terica and Tarica Thomas. She will be missed by all her family and friends.

Her memory will live on in the hearts of her son, Jessie Earl Thomas and wife, Lisa; three granddaughters, Tonya Calhoun and husband, Henry; Stacy DeAndra Thomas, and Eboni Jade Thomas; one great-grandson, Henry Thomas Calhoun; brother-in-law, Alvin (Iris) Cotton; sisters-in-law, Willie Mae Thomas, Lorene Johnson, Mary Webster, Karen Holmes, Pearlie Holmes and Doreatha Holmes; Of special mention, is Katherine’s relationship with her sister-in-law, Willie Mae Thomas, and her lifelong friendship with, Myra Mae Willis. She will be missed as well by all of her nieces, nephews, and other “special” relatives and friends.
